Well hey there, happy May Day to you! As a berry farmer, I’ve always looked forward to the 1st of May like a kid waiting on the first ripe raspberry. It’s not just about the berries, though (although I do start checking the raspberry canes as soon as I see a hint of red in the field).

May Day goes way back to ancient times—in Europe they used to celebrate it as a spring festival; with flowers, dancing, and bonfires to welcome in the warmer season. In places like England, they’d crown a "May Queen". That connection to flowers is still alive and well out here on the farm. This morning, I walked the edge of the field and admired the sun rising on the new blossoms. Generally we don't begin seeing raspberries until June but May is always a special time on the farm.

What really gets me excited though, more than just the colors and perfume of fresh blooms, is the sound of buzzing—bees! That’s when you know the season’s turning. The bees are out and doing their good, hard work, hopping from one blossom to the next, getting those flowers pollinated so our berry harvest can be a sweet one.

May Day reminds me not just of old traditions and delivering flowers on porches of my neighbors, but also that everything is waking up again—soil is warming, fruit is being formed, and life is humming along just like it has for centuries.

So, here’s to flowers blooming, bees buzzing, and a bountiful season ahead! Summer is coming soon & berries are on their way! You can begin to contact Kyle 360-815-2246 for pre-orders of pre-picked Black Currants, generally ripe & ready mid-July.
